Driveshafts and hinges – the general information
The driveshaft represents a pipe by means of which the torque developed by the engine is transferred from the transfer case to differential of the main transfer. Since both ends the shaft is equipped with universal (cardan) hinges.
In front the driveshaft is equipped with the sliding coupling with a bifurcate collar of the cardan hinge on the end. The coupling enters the case of lengthening of the transmission that provides to the transmission line the required freedom of movement in the longitudinal direction compensating the transmission shifts which are inevitably occurring during the movement of the car. Tightness of landing of the coupling in the case of lengthening is provided with an epiploon which in case of development of leaks is subject to replacement.
Each of driveshafts fastens to the transfer case by means of a connecting flange. After removal of the driveshaft the corresponding flange can be dismantled from a box with the purpose of check of a state and performance of replacement of epiploons. Each of flanges is equipped with two epiploons, – one is established between a flange and a case of a box, the second (the smaller size) is put directly in a flange.
Driveshafts require the minimum attention. Hinges jam lubricant once and in case of refusal are replaced assembled. Replacement of hinges is made on the shaft removed from the car.
In view of features of the appointment the driveshaft demands good balancing that means need of periodic cleaning it from the sticking mud deposits, try to examine shaft every time when the car for any reason is lifted above the ground. Check existence on the places and reliability of fixing of balancing small weights. Remember that deployment of a shaft on 180 ° at installation inevitably leads to balancing violation.
Violation of serviceability of functioning of the driveshaft usually is followed by characteristic sounds and increase in level of vibration at the movement of the car (see the Section devoted to diagnostics of malfunctions of knots and systems of the car in Introduction to the present manual).
