Check of a state, adjustment of effort of a tension and replacement of driving belts


Driving belts play an important role in functioning of the engine and many other systems of the car. Eventually belts wear out and have to look round regularly according to the schedule of routine maintenance of the car in order to avoid serious engine failures which correction of consequences can cost to the owner of the car a pretty penny.

The quantity of the driving belts used on concrete model of the car depends on a vehicle complete set auxiliary units. Belts are used for the drive of the generator, steering and water pumps, and also the air conditioner compressor. Depending on character of an arrangement of pulleys more than one unit can be put by one belt in action.


1a. Kill the engine, open a cowl and find driving belts. Highlighting itself a small lamp, fingers feel belts on all their length, checking for existence of cracks and stratifications. Inadmissibly also presence on a belt of attritions, zapolirovanny to gloss of sites and other obvious defects (address accompanying illustrations).
1b. Examine belts on both sides for what overwind them. Defective belts are subject to replacement without fail.
1c. Check a condition of edges on the lower party of belts, they have to have identical depth in the absence of deformation signs.
2. Assessment of effort of a tension of a belt can be made by a nazhimaniye on it by a thumb on the site in the middle between two next pulleys. Pressing has to be rather firm. The parameter characterizing effort of a tension of a belt is the size of its deflection at a nazhimaniye (address an accompanying illustration). As a rule, if pulleys defend from each other at distance from 180 to 280 mm, the size of a deflection has to make 6.4 mm, to distance between pulleys in 305 – 405 mm there corresponds the deflection in 12.5 mm – for a wedge-shaped belt, and 6.4 mm – for multicostal.

Specialists of the Toyota company measure a belt tension by a special dynamometer (address an accompanying yullyustration).

In departments of trade in spare parts and tools it is possible to get testers dynamometers of Nippondenso and Borroughs from dealers. The tester fastens on a short shoulder of a driving belt and at a tension from a scale of a dynamometer the indication is read out. This way is the most exact.


Diesel engines


1. As a rule, correction of effort of a tension of a belt (easing/strengthening) is carried out by shift in the relevant party of the hinged auxiliary unit given by a belt.
2. Usually about one component which fixture is carried out by means of axial/lock and adjusting bolts is the share of each of the driving belts used on the engine. The axial/lock bolt is released, then rotates in the relevant party adjusting (address an accompanying illustration).
3. For easing of effort of a tension of a belt the component should be displaced towards the engine and vice versa. Having finished adjustment, track reliability of tightening of bolts.

Engine 2UZ-FE

If the automatic natyazhitel of a driving belt is established, manual adjustment is not required. However, to be convinced of the correct work of a natyazhitel, the tension of a belt can be checked as follows.


1. Make sure that when pressing a belt with effort about 98 N the natyazhitel moves down (address an accompanying illustration).
2. Check combination of tags of a pulley of a natyazhitel to be convinced of what the belt does not slip on it. If it is necessary, replace a natyazhitel.
3. Make sure that the tag in the form of an arrow is in a scale zone "A" (address an accompanying illustration). If the tag is out of a zone "A", the belt demands replacement. At installation of a new belt the tag has to be in a zone "B".


Diesel engines


1. For replacement weaken effort of a tension of a belt (see above) and throw off it from the pulleys. It will be reasonable to make replacement of all belts at the same time in view of approximately identical speed of their wear. On the majority of models from below to a cowl the label with the scheme of laying of driving belts is pasted (address an accompanying illustration).
2. Upon purchase of new belts take with yourself old as samples – replaceable belts have to correspond strictly removed from the car on a standard size. Track correctness of landing of belts on pulleys.
3. Upon completion of replacement adjust a tension of new belts (see above).

Engines 2UZ-FE


1. To take off a driving belt on this engine, having grasped by a bolt of a natyazhitel a head with a neck or a graggers, turn a natyazhitel counterclockwise to remove a tension, then take off a belt (address an accompanying illustration). The bolt of a pulley of a natyazhitel has the left carving.
2. Establishing a belt, track that all its wedges were laid in streams of pulleys and that the belt did not come off a flute in the bottom of a pulley.
